Movie Review: Mummy 3 - Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Mummy 3

There’s only one comment about the movie: it suck. It failed at a level where it makes you wonder is it a right choice for Hong Kong stars to move into Hollywood. By seeing Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh aches my heart. They made great shows in Hong Kong and they were one of the best in their fields. However Hollywood seems to have dulled their edges and it seems the problem lies in the way Hollywood produce their movies.

One of the reason I heard many people complain about the movie is the lack of production quality that never existed in the past 2 movies. It’s a surprise why Brendan Frasier would even consider doing this movie. The most surprising is that it was directed by Rob Cohen and I think he needs a colon cleanse treatment for producing such a sucky movie compared to Dragonheart, XXX and Stealth.

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

Jet Li was the mighty emperor who united China and has come to realize he has to conquer immortality. His most trusted general finally found a mystic, Zi Juan (Michelle Yeoh) that helped him to become immortal. She cursed him to become an undead stone because he betrayed her by killing her lover (his general) and stabbed her.

So in the present movie, Alex (Luke Ford) found the Emperor’s tomb and celebrated because he has finally uncovered the China’s First Emperor’s Tomb. Unknown to him, General Yang (Anthony Wong) took over the museum where the Emperor was held and managed to revive him using the water of life. It so happens that Rick and Evey (Alex’s parents) was there to celebrate their son’s accomplishments. So begins the journey of the trio to stop the Emperor from taking over the world.

The movie was pretty boring halfway and like many other movies, the good triumph over evil and justice prevails. The Emperor was vanquished and the heroes celebrated the fact that they have gotten rid of the evil for the 3rd time.

One of the things lacking in the movie is that a solid plot. In the previous installment, Stephen Sommers (the director for the first two movies) made it in a way that there seems to be no hope of fighting the evil of that might. In this movie, all they need is a mystical sword and pierce his heart. And to make matters worse, Jet Li seems to be a shape shifting mummy, why not make himself an armored bad ass and stomp around the battleground instead of staying in human form?

The worst thing is the ending part, Michelle Yeoh would chant to strip her immortality to raise the dead; practically in English! It would be made believable if she chanted those in the same script as she did in the beginning of the movie.

So it is a good movie to watch? You bet. If you want to waste your money, that is.

I have yet to watch this movie cos many people said it’s not good. Now your review seals it for me. Not gonna watch a lousy movie! I hate seeing Asian actors playing second fiddle to their Western counterparts.
