WOW Etiquette

Although World of Warcraft is a great game, it has been polluted these days with newbies asking for money. The worst ones just took the money and never even bother thanking you. Problem these days is that there are more new players than ever before and they simply never learned some WOW-etiquette.

As much as I would like to bash their heads with teak outdoor furnitures, I always believe that people will learn from mistake and hope this post will serve as a guideline for them to play well in the game.

1. Never ever ask for money. Old players hate new players that asked for money for a simple fact that we came from an era where gold is nearly impossible to earn. A single gold is huge money to us back then and therefore it is very precious to us. When some low level hunter come asking for 5 gold and will repay back in later date is usually taken very lightly.

2. Improve your English. Don’t just type ‘Wheres headorf’ and expecting people to understand what you are talking about. The players are not mind readers and therefore some will shoo you off the moment you make this kind of mistake. Be courteous and answer in kind and people will definitely take their time to answer you. Take time to type properly and if you did some typo, retype again stating with an apology: ‘Sorry, where’s Herod?’.

3. When in a group, stop putting NEED to everything. Take only what you need. If you’re taken through a low level run by a high level guildie for the sake of quest completion AND YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE BESIDE HIM/HER, then you have the right to do that. Other than that if you keep NEEDing stuff that you can’t wear, people will regard you as NINJA (mindless looters) and will either kick you off from the party or even guild.

4. Stop being an idiot and bashing people around for no good reason. I seen some 15-year old who plays more maturely than 20-something university students who thinks they own the world. Stop acting childishly and act more maturely. Do not complain or brag about some small thing you do. You can start bragging if you can solo Gruul or Karazhan.

5. In-game advice: Politeness will bring you a long way. Be polite in every of your conversation especially when grouping. You may suck at your class but if you can communicate well, they’d think about you in the future. If you are good at your class + communicate well, it’s even better!

6. Don’t keep asking for help. Spend some time doing research in Thottbot and see what can be done. If your class does have trouble getting the stuff, then you may ask for help and tell them of your plight. There’s no point being a hunter and kept asking people tanking normal mob for them just because they do not know how to pull a specific enemy. Learn to know your class. Check out WOWWiki for more information about your strengths and weaknesses of your class.

7. Communication: This is what the game is about. If you’re going to be quiet, at least put up some nod like ‘LOL’ when something funny is spoken or ‘ok’ for agreeing to something. If you cannot multi-task between typing and running together, just say you’re sorry for being slow. People tend to forgive you.

8. Do not let people wait. Although this is not a big issue but remember, if you were in their position. You waited this idiot for nearly an hour while he’s saying he’s coming but still failed to show up now and then. If you are grouped for instance, do not let people wait. Unless your quest cannot be interrupted, drop everything you do and do the instance. Then return to your quest after you’ve done the instance.

9. If you decided to take hunter or warlock, be mindful of your pet. I’ve seen many instances where a hunter who does not know the pet mechanic allowed his pet to chase and ended up aggroing all the mob in the room which caused a wipe (everybody dies which has no way of returning except for running back to where you’ve died).

10. Learn the short terms. I admit I’m still learning but make sure you know the main ones. MT, DPS, Healer, SM, WC, SM, and etc. Make sure you don’t ask the same question twice. Keep learning and put it in your head.
