A Secured Network 1

Okay, here’s a crash course on Networking Security 101. You want to set up networking at home. What would be better than doing in the most secured manner? My friends have been asking me a lot about them and I’ve got tired of answering the same questions again and again. So I decided to blog them here and ask them to come here to check it out. Here are some low-downs on how to get them connected securely.
1. Always use wire to configure your router. Not only does it provide the highest security but also it eases setting up. Make sure you use a proper CAT5e to connect. Not to mention it’s much faster than your wireless connection.
2. Make sure you always enable encryption. Make sure it’s WPA with 128-bit encryption or higher. You’ll never know who would be ‘eavesdropping’ into your line to tap your connection. However, eavesdropper will unable to access any information if you’re accessing to webpage that starts with ‘https://…’, secured FTP, SSL and even VPN connections.
3. I disable wireless when I don’t need them. Security alway comes with a price. This may be hard to do if you like the mobility. I would rather connect my 5-port router to my whole house rather than having a wireless connection. I only enable wireless when necessary when somebody comes to my house and need a quick fix on the internet.
4. Change your wireless encryption password monthly. I’m usually lazy to change my password so I usually engage in complicated 12-character passwords (the longer the better). I write them down on both my notepad + sticky pad to remember them. You can use Microsoft Password Checker to check for you password’s strength.
5. While we’re on password, may I suggest not using any password that has relevance to you such as:
a) Date: your birthday, your wife’s syphilis’s treatment day, & etc
b) Name: your pecker, car, & etc
While it might seem to limit and bothersome to some, networking security has always been breached by human intervention. Either the hacker is brute forcing his way in, or somehow they managed to get some wind of your information to use that against you in one way or another.
So, be safe and try to practice logic when doing your networking. It shouldn’t be hard to do simple practices in order to archive greater safety for your network. Some of the tips can even be applied in your work environment where security is the utmost importance.
