Memory Limitation
![]()
Running Vista these days ain’t that easy anymore. With the advent of all computer memory limited 3.2 GB (no thanks to Intel who is still wusing Intel Architecture 32-bit), it is hard to have the ultimate memory space in your system. Not counting PAE (Physical Address Extension), I think something needs to be done if Microsoft would want to launch the next generation of Windows.
There are a couple ways how this thing would be resolved:
1. Microsoft would reprogram the whole operating system to take up as little resource as possible. I don’t see this happening with Apple’s Mac OS X, where their 1GB Macbook is able to decode DVD, play Quicktime and run Adobe Photoshop CS2 all at the same time with very little lag. If Apple can do it, why not Microsoft? Hell, if Microsoft would even start to incorporate Linux, then be my guess. They could lose a little pride but hell, at least they’d be doing us a favor in the long run.
2. Intel starts churning up 64-bit architecture. While this would be great, don’t forget that software eats up hardware faster than they can develop a 128-bit architecture. While the software has trouble coping from 32-bit to 64-bit programming, I believe this issue would have loads of trouble when coming to implementing it.
3. Transitioning the whole world from 32-bit to 64-bit tends to take up lots of work. Perhaps a quantum computing would help. First thing I would think off is they will develop worlds instead of what you see on a computer screen. This may what people want but let’s not get ahead of ourselves over here. Quantum mechanics is still a long process to be realized to a computer. With advent of quantum mechanics, I think those people should have come out with something that would last us a very long time…
4. It would be a cold day in Hell before Microsoft would even think of releasing their Windows source code to the internet community. Until they do, think of the things that the public could fix. There are a lot of good programmers out there who can work on separate project to make Windows code much cleaner and faster. Not to mention that it would reduce the footprint on the system resources but also speed up a lot of other processes as well. If Microsoft is willing to lend a hand of getting the community to work with the hardware developer, I believe we should have a better operating system at hand.
5. Have Windows connected to Microsoft servers. This means the operating system is running on Microsoft server and we are all using dumb terminal connected to Windows. Imagine how little fuss it would cause as new security vulnerabilities are patched immediately. With virtualization in the rise I think we use software as subscription. You don’t pay and you have limited workability on your space or even lock you out. If you hate Microsoft run things, you can always switch to a free operating desktop like Linux or something.
It seems interesting to see how our operating system will work in the future; these idea remained to be seen. Who knows, they might even implement any of those above ideas into one, thus making it a one stop solution to server our thirst for information, communication and even entertainment for a long time to come.
Hei there, my 4 years old Dell is coughing and sputtering more often these days and am thinking of getting a new laptop but I’ve been hearing scary stories about Windows Vista. However, it seems like all new laptops come with Vista now and they require extra charge if you want to downgrade to XP. What do you think of it now? Still sucks? Do you think MacBook would be a better way to go for a long term use? If I am to get a laptop with 64-bit and 4 3GB memory, would Vista work better?
